Welcome

We are a retired American couple living in France, enjoying the good life with our cats. Our house is in a small hamlet among the Ste. Foy vines. We also have a sailboat that the male half of the spousal unit sailed across the Atlantic in the summer of 08. When the weather warms we will start to visit the sailing ports of Europe. Our stories chronicle our life in France: the good life, the hard life, and the sailing life.

Plan now for Thanksgiving

We ordered our Thanksgiving turkey today!

Background: We spent a special 2001 Thanksgiving in our French home with friends who thought of our well being during the horrific events of 9/11. When we arrived for the November holiday we discovered that there were no turkeys available to feed our guests. They were being fattened for the Christmas season, a full month away. Despite the help of a local butcher who called several producteurs, no big turkey could be secured.

Well Thanksgiving 2008 will have a proper turkey.

Each week we buy duck brochettes, boudin, pate, coquelet, or something else from out favorite poultry producteur. So today after we bought a canette (duck) we ordered our turkey. By November 27th, our bird will have been fattened up to a plump 7 kilos to feed the anticipated guests, a full month before needed to satisfy the fete de noel market.

So as we concern ourselves about whether we have enough dishes, flatware, and glasses we can rest tranquil we have a bird.

Welcome to the vines

Hi from Ste-Foy-la-Grande, France. This is the easternmost appellation of Bordeaux wines in France. We will explain a little bit about appellations later in the blog.

We are a couple of retired US gov't workers, living in France, enjoying the good life with our cats. We live among the Ste. Foy vines and help to harvest them one morning a year. Hard work! Good fun! This blog is intended to let you, gentle reader, understand a little about life in France. The good life, the hard life, the administrative life. Stay tuned.
